Russell’s of Broadway is a real find of a Cotswolds bolthole: a restaurant with rooms, it’s the perfect place for a few lazy days away in the country. Co-owner Barry Hancox is hugely welcoming, with a clear love for and pride in his business; his dedication and cheerful disposition are mirrored by his staff.
The seven rooms above the restaurant are spacious, with exposed beams and brick work and huge, soft beds. Bathrooms are similarly well-equipped with inviting features – from the roll-top bath in the kingsize room to the Jacuzzi bath and his ’n’ hers sinks of the suite.
It’s the dining room that’s the focal point of Russell’s of Broadway, though. It’s large, bright and hung with the work of local artist Jeremy Houghton. Head Chef Matthew Laughton serves modern British food, the menu is very much seasonal and local produce is used wherever possible.
The town of Broadway is a real foodie haven with a number of tea rooms, delis, pubs and restaurants lining the high street. Russell’s also makes a great base to explore the surrounding area – which is full of places of interest including Blenheim Palace and Broadway Tower.
Highs:
- Friendly and attentive staff
- Huge baths and REN products
Lows:
- The absence of any real communal areas (but then again it is a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel)
